Global Equity Markets Rebound as Geopolitical Tensions Ease

Equity Markets03 August 2026

Global equity markets started the week on a positive footing as easing geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran improved investor sentiment and reduced inflation concerns. Lower oil prices, resilient corporate earnings, and expectations that the Federal Reserve will maintain its current policy stance provided support across major markets.

In the United States, equity futures pointed to a stronger opening, with gains led by the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average. The improvement followed reports that planned military action against Iran had been suspended while diplomatic discussions resumed, contributing to a sharp decline in crude oil prices and lower Treasury yields. Investors also welcomed continued strength among several large-cap technology companies, with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Tesla posting gains ahead of the trading session. Attention this week remains focused on corporate earnings and the upcoming US employment report, both of which are expected to provide further guidance on the economic outlook and Federal Reserve policy.

European markets were among the strongest performers, with the DAX and CAC 40 reaching new record highs while the Euro Stoxx 50 also advanced. The decline in oil prices provided a significant boost to sectors sensitive to energy costs, including automotive manufacturers and travel companies. Earnings results across the region continued to support investor confidence, while recent market performance reflects an ongoing rotation toward value-oriented and lower-momentum investment strategies.

The FTSE 100 underperformed its continental peers despite the broader positive environment. Weakness in AstraZeneca weighed on the index following reports of potential acquisition discussions involving Bristol-Myers Squibb. Beneath the headline performance, however, domestic market conditions remained constructive. The FTSE 250 advanced strongly, supported by gains in UK homebuilders as investors reduced expectations for further Bank of England tightening following the decline in oil prices.

Asian markets delivered mixed results. South Korea experienced a sharp reversal after the previous rally in semiconductor stocks, as investors took profits and reassessed expectations surrounding artificial intelligence spending. Japan's Nikkei also moved lower as a stronger Yen weighed on exporters. In contrast, Hong Kong extended its recent rally to a sixth consecutive session, supported by strong earnings from Alibaba and continued inflows through the Stock Connect program, while mainland Chinese markets experienced modest weakness.

Overall, global equity markets continue to balance improving geopolitical conditions with earnings expectations and sector rotation. While technology remains an important driver of performance, broader participation across sectors and regions continues to support the global equity outlook.
