Currency Markets Adjust as Dollar Weakens Following Policy and Geopolitical Shifts

Currency Markets03 August 2026

Global foreign exchange markets continue to adjust to changing monetary policy expectations and easing geopolitical tensions, with the US Dollar remaining under broad pressure following last week's Federal Reserve meeting and coordinated intervention in support of the Japanese Yen.

The Dollar Index declined further, extending recent weakness as investors reassessed expectations for future Federal Reserve policy. Lower oil prices following the de-escalation between the United States and Iran have reduced inflation expectations and, in turn, diminished expectations for additional interest rate increases. At the same time, coordinated US-Japan currency intervention has reinforced market expectations for a weaker Dollar against the Yen. Positioning has amplified the move, as previously elevated speculative long Dollar positions have begun to unwind.

The euro remained broadly stable against the Dollar despite the changing market environment. Improving manufacturing data across the Eurozone continued to support the single currency, while options positioning around key exchange rate levels is expected to influence near-term trading. Central and Eastern European currencies also benefited from easing inflation pressures associated with lower oil prices, although country-specific structural challenges remain.

Sterling underperformed other major European currencies during the session. The weakness was primarily linked to softer market sentiment surrounding the FTSE 100 following declines in AstraZeneca shares rather than broader macroeconomic deterioration. Lower oil prices have also prompted investors to reduce expectations for further Bank of England tightening, contributing to a softer Pound relative to the euro. Crosses involving the Japanese Yen experienced some of the largest movements as Yen strength accelerated following recent intervention.

The Yen remains the dominant story within global foreign exchange markets. Coordinated intervention by Japanese and US authorities represents the first joint operation of its kind in fifteen years and has significantly altered market dynamics. Large-scale purchases of the Japanese currency, combined with explicit support from US officials, have weakened the traditional relationship between US Treasury yields and the Dollar-Yen exchange rate. The resulting unwinding of long-standing carry trade positions has increased the potential for continued volatility in the weeks ahead.

Overall, currency markets remain focused on evolving central bank expectations, policy coordination, and investor positioning. The weakening US Dollar, renewed support for the Japanese Yen, and changing inflation outlook continue to define the current foreign exchange environment.
